no fleas on me

Maybe the current economic situation has left people afraid to spend their money on treasures that were previously other people's trash, or perhaps the people with trash to sell have of late been unable to peddle enough treasures to recoup the charge for space to place a table. Im betting it's both. Whatever the case may be, it was a real downer to visit the mammoth indoor flea market at the state fairgrounds and discover the number of vendor tables reduced to a mere fourth (or less) of what's normally there. The only highlight of the visit was discovering two cardboard bins each holding a different variety of counterfeit Pokemon card sets. The highlight of the trip would have been buying dried papaya from the friendly, feeble, elderly gentlemen who's always there, but this year he was a no-show.

As the uncertainties of 2009 fill some folks with fear and loathing ...

... I'll try to take Ted Turner's unintentional advice:

10 things I resolve to do in 2009

1. To write (less so) and illustrate (more so) a book. Every two years I get a yen to do this (and I've even made decent progress a couple of times), but this year it will happen.
2. To accomplish something that unselfishly and without gain benefits people in some way. What this something is I have no idea. It would be nifty if it involved the creation of art, but I'm game for anything. Yes, it's a rather vaporous resolution, but I'm no stranger to vapidity. Wait a minute, I don't think that sentence came out right - which leads to my next resolution ...
3. To increase my vocabulary. One can never have too many words in one's noggin.
4. To be more patient. The meter's little needle receives no benefit by spending so much time in the red zone.
5. To stop sweating the small stuff. I'll try not to sweat the big stuff either.
6. To learn a new skill. Probably something having nothing to do with a computer.
7. To prune my CD collection. Watch this space.
8. To buy some new pants. These things don't last forever.
9. To reconnect with extended family. Where did the years go?
10. To be a better loved one to my lovely ones. You know who you are.
